Research into Practice

Research for Improving Student Outcomes

Dr. López approaches instructional improvement as a practitioner-scholar: identifying problems, designing interventions, measuring their effects, and translating evidence into stronger teaching and student-support systems. His doctoral research examined how visually supported instruction influences content-area knowledge acquisition among Latinx English language learners and general education students.

The Influence of Visual Aids in High School ELL and General Education Social Studies Classrooms: A Quantitative Study

Kean University • Doctoral Research • 2022

Using a randomized experimental design, Dr. López studied students in an urban New Jersey high school, including Latinx English language learners and general education students. Participants were assigned to visually supported or traditional instructional conditions and completed pre- and post-assessments measuring content-area learning.

Across the full sample, students receiving visually supported instruction demonstrated an average growth-score advantage of 5.92 points. Instructional modality produced a statistically significant effect across the complete sample and among Latinx English language learner participants. Among the Latinx ELL participants, estimated mean growth was 9.20 points with visually supported instruction compared with 3.48 points under the traditional condition.

The findings reinforce the importance of intentional visual scaffolding, explicit content-vocabulary development, realia, accessible representations of complex concepts, and teacher preparation that helps multilingual learners engage with rigorous academic content.

From Research to Leadership Practice

This research informs how Dr. López approaches instructional leadership today. He helps educators select purposeful visual supports, strengthen academic vocabulary, scaffold rigorous content, design accessible learning experiences, and use assessment evidence to determine whether instructional changes are producing growth. The work connects research, teacher development, curriculum implementation, multilingual learner access, and measurable school improvement.

  • Develop teachers' capacity to use visual scaffolds, imagery, maps, models, and realia intentionally.
  • Connect academic vocabulary to visual context so multilingual learners can access content while developing English proficiency.
  • Use pre-assessment, post-assessment, and progress-monitoring evidence to evaluate instructional effectiveness.
  • Maintain rigorous learning objectives while removing unnecessary linguistic and representational barriers.
  • Translate research findings into professional learning, curriculum review, coaching, and intervention design.
